Linguisticator – Macunx VR Virtual Reality Memory Palace Platform

The Challenge

Learning a new language or new skill is challenging at any age. Traditional methods usually take the form of book learning, perhaps coupled with parrot-fashion spoken sessions.

Mancunx VR sets to break away from traditional learning techniques by harnessing the power of the learner’s spatial memory and providing a platform to build bespoke memory palaces using VR Technology.

Having spent several years developing different methods of applying memory techniques, Linguisticator have developed a piece of software that is both user friendly and flexible enough to be used for a range of subjects and disciplines. The software is now complete and the first version will launch publicly on the gaming platform Steam in mid June.

KEEP+’s engagement with this innovative, new to market software follows a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016, which thanks to 168 backers achieved a staggering 395% of its original fundraising target. Macunx VR has been steadily increasing its presence in the tech world with articles in Wired Magazine, BBC Click and a TEDx talk delivered by Linguisticator’s founder and CEO, Dr Aaron Ralby.

The Solution

Linguisticator has been awarded an ERDF grant to procure an external consultant providing specialist expertise to propel Macunx VR to market.

This funding will cover 50% of the provision of a suitably qualified individual to work directly with the business to release an initial version of the software, gather feedback and transform the data gathered into ongoing refinements to the product.

An online shopfront will also be developed to successfully market the new product, demonstrating the adaptability and application of this innovative technology.

The Outcome

The consultancy activity, which is anticipated to last approximately one year, will result in a trialed, refined and formally released version of Macunx VR.

In the process of creating this innovative new product, the introduction of the software to Linguisticator’s existing learning technology catalogue will promote growth within the business in the form of eventually procuring new staff for ongoing Technology development and specialist marketing. This, coupled with the increase in profitability and overall sector presence will create a real step change for Linguisticator.

The first version of Macunx VR was made available to view on Steam in June 2018, ahead of its public release very soon. Further information can be found on the Steam website.

Funding

The overall project value of the collaboration is approximately £25k of which ERDF have awarded a grant for £12.5k.

Grants for Consultancy: The Process

Once confirmed as eligible for ERDF funding, Linguisticator completed a simple application form for a KEEP+ consultancy grant, providing quotes and justification for the proposed consultancy activity. This was assessed and approved by a panel and a formal grant offer was issued and accepted.

Timeframe:

The consultancy intervention is expected to last approximately one year. During that time the business and consultant will work together to design, test, launch, refine, and expand the new product.
